Stump Grinding in
The Triad.
Real jobs. Real yards. Stump Grinding across the Triad — before we leave, the site looks better than when we arrived.
About This Service
Stump Grinding in The Triad.
That stump in your yard isn’t going anywhere on its own. It’s a tripping hazard, a lawnmower-killer, and a permanent reminder of a tree that used to be there. 316 Tree Services grinds stumps across the Triad — single residential stumps, multi-stump lots, and post-removal cleanup.
We grind 6 to 12 inches below ground level, which is enough for sod, landscaping, or just having flat usable yard again. Mulch left on-site or hauled off — your call. We can also backfill the hole with topsoil so it’s ready for grass seed right after.
Every stump is different — diameter, age, root spread, access. Free quote, same day, on-site or over the phone.

Know What You’re Dealing With
What Kind of
Grinding Job Is Yours?
A single 12-inch stump is a different job than a yard full of 30-inch hardwood stumps with sprawling root systems. Here’s how we categorize stump grinding in the Triad.
Category One
Single Stump
1 Stump · Under 18in Diameter
One small to mid-size stump with good access. Walk-behind grinder, in and out, mulch left on-site or hauled. Often paired with post-removal cleanup.
- 1 stump under 18in diameter
- 6–12 inches below grade
- Mulch left on-site or hauled
- Same-day completion
- Topsoil backfill available
Category Two
Multi-Stump
2–5 Stumps · Mixed Sizes · Residential Yard
The most common grinding job — multiple stumps from a recent removal or cleanup of a long-overgrown yard. Mid-size grinder, full crew, half-day to full-day.
- 2–5 stumps, any size mix
- 6–12 inches below grade
- Surface roots ground when needed
- Mulch hauled or left
- Topsoil backfill available
Category Three
Heavy Hardwood / Lot Work
6+ Stumps · Large Hardwoods · Cleared Lots
High stump counts, large hardwood stumps, or full-lot grinding after clearing. Heavy grinder, significant time, often paired with lot clearing or post-clearing prep.
- 6+ stumps or large hardwoods
- Cleared-lot stump removal
- Heavy-duty grinder for oak, hickory, walnut
- Multi-load mulch haul-off
- Site prepped for grass, build, or landscape
What Moves a Grinding Job Into a Higher Category
Stump Diameter
A 12-inch pine stump grinds out in minutes. A 36-inch oak stump can take an hour or more. Diameter and wood density both factor in.
Stump Count
More stumps means more grinding time, more fuel, and more cleanup. Multi-stump jobs are scoped together for efficiency.
Wood Hardness
Softwoods like pine grind fast. Hardwoods like oak, hickory, and walnut take significantly longer and wear teeth faster.
Access & Root Spread
Stumps in open yards are simple. Stumps tight against fences, near foundations, or with large surface roots take more setup and careful work.

Why 316 Tree Guys
Two Things Most
Tree Crews Can’t Promise.
In a trade full of one-truck operators and “I’ll call you back next week” estimates, we built 316 Tree Guys on two principles that protect your property and your time.
The 316 Tree Guys Promise
Fully Insured & 15-Minute Response — Every Time.
Two things kill homeowner confidence: the fear of getting stuck with damage you didn’t cause, and the wait for an estimate that never comes. We fixed both.
Fully Insured · Triad-Wide
General liability and workers’ comp on every job. Ask for our certificate before we start — we keep it ready. If a crew pushes back on that request, hire someone else.

Common Questions
Straight Answers,
No Runaround.
The questions homeowners actually ask before they hire us. If yours isn’t here, call — we’ll answer it on the spot.
How much does stump grinding cost in the Triad?
Stump grinding is priced by diameter, count, and wood hardness. A single 12-inch pine stump grinds out in minutes and costs accordingly. A yard full of 30-inch oak stumps takes hours and prices differently. We give free estimates over the phone if you can tell us the rough size, or on-site if you’d rather. Call (336) 259-8460.
How deep do you grind stumps?
6 to 12 inches below grade — enough for sod, landscaping, or having flat usable yard again. For most residential work, 6 inches is enough. For replanting in the same spot or building over it, we go deeper. Tell us what’s going in there next and we’ll grind accordingly.
What do you do with the mulch?
Your choice. We can leave the wood chips and mulch on-site (free, good for garden beds), or haul it off in our trailer (small additional charge). Most Triad homeowners ask us to haul it. Some keep it for their own landscaping use.
Can you grind stumps near my house or fence?
Yes, as long as we can get the grinder to it. Our walk-behind grinders fit through 36-inch gates. For tight access, we may use a hand grinder or smaller machine. We grind carefully around foundations, fences, and irrigation lines — but you should mark any underground utilities before we start.
Will the stump regrow if you grind it?
For most species, no. Ground stumps don’t regrow because the root system can’t photosynthesize without leaves. A few species (cherry, sweetgum, maple) can occasionally send up suckers from remaining roots — those die back quickly without canopy. If you see sprouts, mow them or apply a stump treatment.
